One screw causes a loss of 1 billion yuan - warning of NOAA satellite accident

On September 6, 2013, the nearly $290 million NOAA-N-Prime advanced weather satellite that was almost completed was inadvertently dropped at work. The 14-foot high spacecraft slides vertically from the fixture at a height of 3 feet from the ground as it prepares to transition from a vertical position to a horizontal position. At that time, the technicians loosened the screws at the bottom of the satellite, but forgot to record them. A group of technicians who came up later rotated the bracket carrying the satellite on one side, but did not know that the screws at the bottom had been loosened, and ignored the need to check whether all the screws were fixed before the satellite moved. The result was that the NOAA-N- Prime weather satellite fell on a concrete floor about 1 m above the ground.

To this end, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration finally decided to re-manufacture the NoAA N- Prime weather satellite with a direct economic loss of $135 million.
